Dr. Bryan Bui:So thank you for having me, Cameron,
Cameron Huang:of course. So our first question is what inspired you to specialize in pediatric dentistry?
Dr. Bryan Bui:I grew up with one dental problems and my parents didn't know about kids dentistry. So they just took me to a general dentist. And he was it wasn't so nice. He was very kind. He just said, you know, let's just sit down, open your mouth. Let's do this, you know, and he was pretty rough. And, and yeah, basically it hurt, did he? You know, when I told him I wasn't numb, he, he just ignored me and said that, you should be fine. Don't worry about it. So of course, during my generation, we don't talk back to grownups and so I just put up with it. But it created a lot of pain and anxiety. And shucks, I'm even now I'm still traumatized. And I'm scared of going to the dentist and I'm a dentist. It's amazing. I tell the kids all the time. Yeah, like when I sit in the chair. Um, you know, my heart's like beating 100 miles and I'm just like, so freaking out my high blood pressure. But so I figured you know, we we need some good pediatric dentists and that that can really help the kids, not be traumatized, have a good time and have good dental health and their future not be afraid of going to the dentist. Great.
Cameron Huang:So what do you find most rewarding about working with children and a dental setting.
Dr. Bryan Bui:Similar to what I was talking about rewarding is trying to give them a good experience the best experience possible so that way they can actually find it, having fun going to the dentist and look forward to going to the dentist and so it's it's and part of that then is fun for me too. Because I'm able to sing what? Sometimes shucks, I'm rapping different songs Lady Gaga with them. It's just, it's just a lot of fun. You know, sometimes I'm like, Wow, are we doing a tic tock video or something? And yet, we're pulling their teeth. We're doing a root canal and crown and actually is a fun environment. That's just crazy.
Cameron Huang:Wow, you already like answer two of my other questions. How important is early dental care and what are steps parents can take to ensure their children can have a healthy smile.
Dr. Bryan Bui:So yes, we do seek some kids that are only shucks like three months old, six months old. It is so important to start off with for parents to know their responsibility to help the child have good dental health. Because unfortunately, we have seen many kids where they have a mouthful of calories from milk bottle, right? And they are only 1416 months old. And so that's you know, that's why we even the pediatric American Academy of Pediatrics bans that kids should be seen and no later so that way we can have some of that anticipatory guidance for the parents. So they know their responsibility. So it helps them not get cavities. You know, and then of course, as they go, they aren't afraid of going to the dentist, they know the routine and they know what they have to do and so also their kids will be able to do a great job and have great teeth. You know my excitement is actually to see the kids come in with no cavities, simple cleaning, and and just, you know having fun with them, talking to them and doing the easy stuff. You know, so that's, that makes it also very rewarding.
Cameron Huang:Perfect. And what are some of the most common dental problems you see in children? And do you have any ways they can help be prevented.
Dr. Bryan Bui:So one of the biggest problem I see is that the lack of knowledge that you have to floss, you know, it's just so natural, we all know we have to brush our teeth. But that flossing, even for parents, too, they just don't realize that while I have to floss my child so early, they've, you know, they're just, you know, three, four years old, five years old. And so the majority of cavities that I have to fix are usually in between those back molars, because most parents, they brush so on the top teeth, right front and back of the teeth, nice and clean, gorgeous teeth, and then I get the X ray. And then I see that there's cavities in between the teeth that you just couldn't see, because they didn't know that they had to floss so the food was stuck between. So that's why, you know, that doesn't matter what age is just are the teeth touching or not. If they you have faces between, then the toothbrush bristles can get between and clean and no problem. But if the touching when you chew, the foods just gets wedged in between that's how you get the cavities between and those are so sneaky. And so that's definitely that's one of my big mission is to inform parents that while you have to floss them early on, is the T for touching.
Cameron Huang:So informational. And are there any
Dr. Bryan Bui:particular so basic, you know, so simple? Yet so important?
Cameron Huang:Are there any particular dietary habits or foods that can negatively impact children's mental health?
Dr. Bryan Bui:Yeah, we just see that there's just so many different variations and variety of snacks available to the kids nowadays. And drinks you know, energy drinks sodas, the obvious picky foods, you know, the gummies while you know the variety of different gummies gummy worms, gummy bears, gummy, squid, whatever, octopus, all these variations that are just so yeah, it's so fun to eat. I mean, I, I honestly love them too. It's fun to eat with my kids, but we just keep it on more on the minimum. So to reduce your risk of cavities and just, it's a balancing act. So it's a balancing system. So if you're snacking more than you've got to also then drink more water to rinse your mouth out also to floss and brush more. So you counterbalance that. All that up with a lot that snacks and things like that.
Cameron Huang:For our final question, what are your thoughts on the use of dental sealants and fluoride treatments for children?
Dr. Bryan Bui:Oh, absolutely. You know, shucks, all that stuff has been around for for a long time. And so you you hear so many different conspiracy theories about fluoride. Use in the water system, maybe the governance the government is trying to brainwash you or control you somehow. But still, within the Dental Research, it still shows that fluoride is, you know, one of the number one components that can help strengthen your enamel, it helps to remineralize your enamel, so it's still awesome. And then also sealants wise, shucks. I tried, I remind myself all the time to, you know, to treatment plan that because I sometimes I forget that how effective that is, I wish I from my teeth, that would help a lot to seal all those deep grooves and help it reduce the chance of for mighty for my kids.
Cameron Huang:And finally, do you have any final messages or advice that you would like to share with parents or children who may be listening?
Dr. Bryan Bui:Just so you know, it's just a reminder because most parents, like, you know, we think, Oh, their baby teeth, you know, what's the big deal? You know why? You're gonna lose them anyways, you know, so for parents, unfortunately, a lot of the teeth you just keep for so many years, you just don't realize like, especially the back molars, you don't lose them to 10 and 12. So that's the years when, you know, he's old, you know, so that's a lot of years to go. So sometimes when a dentist sees a cavity, the recommended treatment, sometimes parents will say, you know, let's not fix it, I don't want to spend money on it. I've got other more important things to spend on but unfortunately a child's going to keep these for many years and eventually it will lead to pain and infection in their teeth could cause problems too. And defects in their adult teeth that's growing under there. It's going to cause them pain. It's going to cause them, but they can't, you know, they when they're not going to speak up for themselves. So, you know, you know, we have to remind them to speak up for them and remind parents that it's so important that you actually have to take care of these baby teeth, because you will keep them for a long time. You know, same for the kids, you know, you have to let your parents help you. This is for the timers a little hard for them to swallow because they will, you know, they want they want to be independent and do everything themselves at two years old, three years old, but they're just not capable. So we have to count on our parents sometimes to help us up until maybe like seven years old before we can do an okay job, you know, so, you know, they love you. And that's why they help you. So, you know, count on them at the end.
